Cantaloupe Recall

Just another reason to add to the list of why you should grow your own...

FDA News:
To date, the FDA has received reports of 50 illnesses in 16 states and nine illnesses in Canada linked to the consumption of cantaloupes. No deaths have been reported; however, 14 people have been hospitalized. The states are Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.

DOLE:
Approximately 6,104 cartons of cantaloupes were distributed to wholesalers in regions of the eastern United States and Quebec between February 5 and February 8, 2007. The cantaloupes have a light green color skin on the exterior, with orange flesh. The cantaloupes were distributed for sale in bulk in cardboard cartons, with 9, 12 or 15 cantaloupes to a carton. The recalled cartons are dark brown with "Dole Cantaloupes" in red lettering. They have a thirteen-digit number on a white tag pasted to the carton; the tenth digit is a 2.

I was already really nervous about melons that aren't grown in the US or Canada, and then this! I give up. I'm not desperate enough for canteloupe to get salmonella (or have my kids get it) and possible live with arthritis for the rest of my life!

When my husband was preparing for a trip to Brazil he was told to never, ever eat melons because people tend to inject them with water to make them feel heavier, and the water wasn't safe for my husband to drink.

Hiya, Amy.
Thanks for dropping in.
Isn't it weird that all this has popped up in the last year - lettuce, spinach, hamburg and now cantaloupe. Funny, there didn't seem to be (to me) as near as much news coverage about the cantaloupe.

I didn't know that about the water injections!
Interesting!
I guess if you add water it would feel heavier though, so makes sense. Definitely not right, but I could see the point of doing it. I remember hearing something about everyone having a fit and that the water was just 'fine' to drink. I still wouldn't take the chance!
